Historic Area
since 1836

In July of 1836 Captain William Drummond Stewart, along with several of the most famous of all trappers (Kit Carson, Fremont, Jim Bridger..), and the artist Alfred Miller, snuck away from Rendezvous for several weeks. Bernard DeVoto, Pulitzer prize winner for his book "Across the Wide Missouri", researched and found that these guys actually snuck off to Sir Drummond Stewarts most favorite spot in all the Rocky Mountain west to guide some dignitaries from Europe on what just may be the very first documented guided big game hunt in the American mountain west.

DeVoto describes through Stewarts notes, his amazement at both "the abundance and the vast variety of animals in the area, multiplied by the overall breathtaking splendor of the area".

I almost fell over when he describes the "secret area" and names the landmarks at my hunting camp.

These are copies of the actual pictures that Alfred Miller painted on his 1836 trip with Stewart, and these are obviously my hunting area.

Today this area still has a great abundance and variety of game. The scenery is still spectacular. People still come from around the world to hunt this very spot. Of all the American west, Stewart picked this spot as his favorite, because it was so special in the early 1800's. Today in the early 2000's it still has that special magic. Come out with us and make it your favorite spot.
